Notes for John DAVENPORT |
John Jr.'s mother, it seems, was Betsy Williams from the Williams family of Harpersfield, New York. John Jr. was born in Harpersfield. Betsy had lived prior to John Jr.'s birth in John Davenport Sr.'s home in Davenport (with John Sr.'s wife Anna), most likely as a young servant. (See John Davenport probate testimony 1830 records in Delhi County Courthouse, Delaware County, New York)
At age eighteen, John Jr. (soon to become "John Sr.") married Catherine Flansburgh of Oneonta. The couple had ten children. John Jr., now Sr., operated the family farm of his father for many years. He did not sell the homestead and farm until 1902. He died in 1909.
"John (Jr.) Davenport was born in the town of Harpersfield, October 20th, 1822. His father's name was John. He was an only son. His father came from Connecticut . . .
(actually John Sr. came from Spencertown, Columbia County, New York according to an analysis of court and deed documents in the town of Delhi, Delaware County, New York, and various genealogical data. John Sr. was born about 1776 in Spencertown and came to the area prior to the formation of the Town of Davenport about 1810 or before. John Sr.'s second cousin Noah also came to the area from neighboring Hillsdale, Columbia County New York. He had lands in Austerlitz, New York according to his will dated August 1st, 1840. Noah, however, was born in Lebanon, New London County, Connecticut. Many people had thought Noah and John Sr. were brothers.)
. . . to this county very early in this century, and gave the name to the town of Davenport. September 9th, 1841, John Davenport married Catharine Flansburgh. Of their union ten children were born; five sons and two daughters are now living. Mr. Davenport received an academic education. He was left an orphan at an early age, and during a vigorous manhood has pursued the occupation of farming. He still follows that business on one of the most beautiful locations in the Charlotte valley." (per W.W. Munsell book 1880, Appendix)
"John Davenport is a son of John Davenport, after whom the town was named and resides upon the same farm where his father died. He was born October 20th, 1822, at Harpersfield. He married Catherine Flansburgh of Oneonta, and they have seven children (as of 1880 or 79)." (per W.W. Munsell book 1880, Biographical section). (Apparently, they had 10 children in all, three of whom died prior to 1880).
John Jr. is buried at Davenport Cemetery, Davenport, Delaware County, New York. |
Notes for Catherine Flansburg |
Resided at some time in Oneonta, New York., perhaps prior to her marriage.
Married John Davenport (Jr.) at age 19 or 20. They had 10 children.
Buried in Davenport Cemetery, Davenport, Delaware County, New York. |
