Delaware County, NY Genealogy and History Site

About this Website . . .
. . . an all volunteer project, a labor of love . . . In September of 1996, because of my Delaware County heritage, I launched this Delaware County website after transcribing the Delaware County sections of "French's Gazetteer - 1860". A great starting place for anyone researching their ancestors of Delaware County. A link to the GNIS list of cemeteries was added and the site was up and running. Laurie Kyle, of Washington, had written before I uploaded the site and asked what she could do. Laurie was the first volunteer for helping to put more data online, starting with the Marriage Index of 1908. Then the Delaware County Clerk's office, with Shirley Houck and Linda Ogborn, two individuals very interested in preserving history and genealogy, responded positively to a request from me for genealogical and historical data, - the rest is history.

With such a great start, other volunteers stepped forward to help put data online. Many of these volunteers helped key in the five major books that we have on the website, Biographical Review - 1895; The History of Delaware County by W.W. Munsell- 1797-1880; History of Delaware County by Jay Gould -1856; Centennial History of Delaware County, New York: 1797-1897, edited by David Murray, LL.D.; and the Historical Sketches by Lincoln R. Long . I made duplicate copies of many of the books and sent sections for keying in to each of the volunteers. All costs of duplicating and mailing were borne by me, as is so for all assignments sent out. Any hardcopy mailed in to me is mailed at the expense of the person submitting it. This is truly an all volunteer project, a labor of love.

As things have progressed, I rarely send hardcopy out for keying in anymore. Our Delaware County Researchers are digging through their stores of materials and sharing freely. They are keying or scanning materials and sending electronic copy directly for me to code for the website.

My approach to building the website from the start has been to do it from the 'researchers' point of view. What is it that I would I like to see when I go online to research that elusive ancestor? I like a site that is comprehensive, and not a site that is merely an index to other websites. On the Delaware website, you have access to all the materials that we currently have prepared for the Internet. All in one spot! The queries are kept on this website, filed alphabetically by surname. To view the 'Smith' surname for instance, it takes only one click from the Table of Contents Page to bring up every Smith query. All in one spot!

Listed below are the names of volunteers who have transcribed and/or contributed data for this site along with those who have volunteered to do 'lookups'. This overall effort is what has produced the website as it stands today. We all appreciate very much the positive feedback received from researchers . As I've said many times, we love doing this, but when researchers take the time to express their appreciation, it makes our effort all the more worthwhile!

Sincerely,
