HENDERSON-BEACH? - I have been trying for years to determine the correct maiden name for REBECCA, the wife of ALFRED BEACH of Walton. Alfred, born about 1809, was the youngest son of Richard Mansfield Beach and Lucinda Root. Rebecca was born about 1808 in New York according to census records. Published genealogies and many online family trees list her maiden name as Strong. Most do not list her parents or give information about possible siblings. The online trees give other family trees as the source of Rebecca’s maiden name.
Family papers bring up the name HENDERSON as another possibility for Rebecca’s maiden name, but I have not found primary sources or online sources to verify it. My great aunt had a photo of a man and woman. Two notes are on the back. One says, “Mr. L. Henderson and wife.” The other says, “Papa’s uncle Lafayette Henderson, Evanston, Ill.” Lafayette Henderson’s obituary gives Delaware County, New York as his birthplace and his death record lists James Henderson and Nancy as his parents, making James and Nancy Nethaway Henderson of Walton his likely parents. However, online family trees offer confusing information. Some say James and Nancy did have a son named Lafayette, but he was born in 1808, not 1829. Others list a daughter named Rebecca born about 1814, but no one has any other information about her. Rebecca married Alfred Beach about 1829.
My best evidence for Henderson as Rebecca’s maiden name is her youngest son’s death certificate. It gives Henderson or Anderson (difficult to read) as his mother’s maiden name. I hope someone can help me find Rebecca’s true maiden name and connect me to her parents. - Enid Macken - posted 03-2017

HINMAN - Searching for the parents of my g-grandfather Levi HINMAN who was born in Greene Co 1836 but known to have last lived, just before the turn of the century, in Downsville, possibly in Wilson Hollow. Family lore has it that the parents died very young and the children were "farmed-out" to friends and relatives but kept the Hinman name. No confirmation of this exists. Levi Hinman appears in the 1850 census (Delaware Co) as living in the household of Washington Ives. Efforts to locate some Ives family not productive. I know that there were three children between 1831 and 1843: William 1831, Levi 1836 and Ellen 1843. There may be three more Alonzo, Russell and Adele but we are not certain--these latter are mentioned in a Bible own by Lizzie Alexander with no information. The words "Nathan and Mary H-1810" also appear which, if this were birthdate and they were twins, (we know there was a brother and sister by those names, children of Nathan Hinman) would make Nathan 21 yr in 1831--which is plausable. One source names Nathan Mitchell Hinman and Mary Fullington as parents of Levi, etc but we think this is pure conjecture--even that source cannot prove it. So here we are. My line to Sgt Edward Hinman the immigrant 1659 would be complete if we could find the missing Hinman. Maxine C. Bartz - posted 12-97

French's 1861 "Gazeteer of New York", p. 261 and W.W. Munsell's 1880 History of Delaware County, p. 196, indicates that James Howard was one of the early settlers of Hamden, Delaware County. The second wife of James Howard, was Dolly (Dorothy?) Howland, believed to be the daughter of Gershom Howland and Elizabeth Parker, who arrived about 1796 in the area. James and Dolly's children were: Mary born 1798, Amanda born 1800, Joshua. No record of James has been located in 1790 Census but the 1800 Federal Census does list two James Howard families in Delaware County. HOWELL-BROWNE - I am researching a couple who were married in Franklin, New York in 1819 at the then Baptist Church. Abigail Howell is listed on the record of baptisms at the church, clearly performed when she was a teen, not as an infant. Abigail married an Allis or Alis Browne. It appears that the Howells were large land-owners there after the Rev. War and Abigail's sister seems to have married an Edgerton. It is difficult to imagine Abigail's parents allowing her to marry a man without family. I have been researching Alis Browne for quite some time and cannot find him before Franklin, NY. though the Howells seem to go back to Long Island before the War. A census record from Ohio where they both died says that Allis was born in Massachusetts.
I have visited Franklin, NY twice now, just to walk through town and the cemetery. I am doing the work for a 2nd great-grandson of Allis and Abigail who lives in California. The Allis name stops when a 23-year-old Allis Jr. dies at Winchester in 1862 during the Civil War. Within 18 months his father dies as well. The family subsequently migrates to Calif. We forget how devastating it must have been to lose your first-born in the Civil War. As a result, though, the family is a bit cut off from its New England history. I would appreciate any information anyone has on Allis Browne...a carriage-maker and possibly a WellsFargo agent, or at least he was in Ohio. Carin Pacifico - posted 11-2020

HOWLAND - My great great grandfather was John "Jake" Howland. His family was from Delaware County, NY, and he had a brother and a sister, per a letter written by his daughter to a cousin inabout 1907. I have written documentation that his father was from NY and his mother was from Scotland--don't know what year. After becoming pregnant with John, the mother wanted to go back to Scotland to give birth, which is what happened. The family returned to America shortly after John's birth and settled in Delaware County again. John was born sometime between 1823 and 1832 - varies from account to account, and I might also state he was a hard core alcoholic who died in 1901 from drinking wood alcohol at Big Sur. When died, newspaper article lists him as born in 1824 Foreign Born Voters of 1872 lists him as born in 1832. His marriage information states he is born in 1832. I believe my John Howland is listed in the 1850 US Census listed in Hamden, Delaware County, living with a Mr. Honeywell who is a blacksmith, and John is also a blacksmith. John Howland went to CA by ship around the horn of South America, arriving sometime in the mid 1850's. He is listed as a blacksmith in the 1860 US Census in Sonoma Co., CA. I have searched all the census reports from Delaware County from 1800 - 1860 to see if I can find a family that might match. Since John had moved from home by the 1850 Census, it is only a guess at this point which hash mark might be John. He could be the son of Elias, Malachi, George F., Daniel, Phineas, or Asa C.
