AVERY - I am trying to find any information about my great grandfather Joseph Avery (his name has also been seen in every other census as Every) who was born 1825 in Delaware County but lived his adult life and raised his family in Ulster County. I do not know where in Delaware County he was born. The first census I find him in is the 1855 census for the Town of Wawarsing in Ulster County where he lived with his wife Mary E (Davis) Avery, his daughter Josephine and his sister-in-law Rachel Davis. It is in this census where the information that he was born in Delaware County is found. At some point before 1860 he and his family removed to the Town of Olive where he lived the rest of his life. His children were: Josephine b. 1855 m. George Smedes; Willard b. 1857 m. 1)Eliza Reeves 2)Margaret Evans; Virgil (my grandfather) b. 1859 m. Ella Sherman; Rachel b.1861 m. 1)James Coons 2)James Dennison; Judson b.1871 m. Ella Roosa. Joseph died 5 April 1898 in Rosedale, Ulster County at the home of his son Judson. In the 1860 census Joseph is living next door to a John S. Avery who may have been his brother? John's wife's name was Rachel (I think Roosa, but I'm not sure) and I believe the John S. Avery family removed to Michigan. I have no real clue whether Joseph & John were related, it is basically conjecture at this point based solely upon their ages (John was 2 years older than Joseph in the 1860 census) and based upon the fact that they were right next door to each other. The only other supporting evidence I have for this claim is that when I find John S. in the 1855 census (he is living in the Town of Olive) his information states that he was born in Delaware County. I am hoping that someone will have some information or perhaps some ideas as to where I can go from here. Joseph is my brick wall and after pounding my head against it for so many years I would love to tear it down! Sissy Ann Avery-Pigman - posted 09-2017

AVERY - I have been searching for info for my gr.gr.gr.grandparents Smith Avery and Elizabeth "Betsy" (Sliter) Avery (daughter of Nicholas Sliter from Margaretville. They lived in Roxbury in 1850s then to Masonville in 1862. Then to Sidney Center for most 1870s then back to Masonville in late 1870s. I have death dates for them and their kids (John Wesley, Amos, George, Olive (Bowman..first husband) Courtright and Sarah Young (husband Herman "Harry" Young...Barbourville). But, George Avery is the ONLY one for whom I have place of Burial. Smith Avery was a very succssful farmer and had total 5000 acres+ by 1875. He retired on "The old Ambrose Bolt farm" (don't know location). A possible place of burial is the Youngs cemetery on Steam Mill Road. (tho' he and Betsy died in Bennettsville but don't seem to be buried there?). I've been up and down that road (Steam Mill) searching and asking to no avail. I see it is listed in the list of 312 cemeteries. The Young family included son Herman, Stephen (father) and mother Sarah (Haight) Young. Herman's wife Sarah (Avery) Young and their kids Paul, Robert and Ralph. If any of this sounds even remotely familiar please email me. Mark Avery - posted 09-2004
