BERNHARD AUGUST SCHUBERT was Louie (Ludwig) Shubert’s father. Louie was a well-known auctioneer in Delaware, Otsego counties and beyond, primarily of dairy cows. He also auctioneered household and farm sales. He was married to my mother’s sister, Phebe Barringer, from Walton. Bernhard and his wife, Lydia, and family arrived in New York City from Germany in 1902. The family moved several times including to Redwood, Minnesota where Ludwig was born, Expanse, Saskatchewan (1909-1918), Nebraska, North Carolina and finally, Franklin, Delaware Co. New York where he was a poultry farmer. Bernard wrote a book, A True Story, The Homesteader: From the Pulpit to the Plow, 10 Years in Western Canada published in 1945. There are family copies and it is in the Peel’s Prairie Provinces Collection at the University of Alberta. --Paula Hughson, posted here April 21, 2016
