Company I, 72nd NY Volunteer Infantry Electronic Text prepared by Laurie Kyle, Spokane, Washington, February 14, 1997 "Muster Roll of Captain Robert T. Johnson, I Company, in the 72nd Regiment of Volunteers commanded by Colonel Nelson Taylor called into the service of the United States by the President under Genl orders No 15, May 2, 1861 from the Twenty first day of June 1861 - date of this muster - for the term of Three years or during the War unless sooner discharged." Company I, of the 72nd New York Volunteer Infantry contained the first large group of Delaware County Men and boys to leave for service in the Civil War. As such, they received special attention from the citizens of the County. (See descriptions in the Delaware Gazette, a newspaper published in Delhi and The History of Delaware County, New York by Munsell, page 81.) On June 4th, 1861, they marched out of Delhi, through Walton and from there to the railroad where they proceeded to Camp Scott, on Staten Island. It was here that the Delaware County men were sworn into Federal Service, attached to the 3rd Regiment, Excelsior Brigade (also known as the Sickles Brigade) and designated as Company I therein. According to Historian Wilber Pearce, the Regiment wore the Zouave uniform of red pants, a vest sort of jacket and a fez cap. He also wrote that a history of the Regiment was written by Henri Brown, which was published in 1902 at Jamestown, N.Y. Delaware Gazette, September 26, 1963
NOTE: All of the above were enrolled by Captain Robert T. Johnson and each was 230 miles distant from the place of rendevous according to this Roll. The Roll was filed in the Delaware County Clerk's Office on July 3, 1861. This Muster Roll is also printed in Volume III, "Muster Rolls on file in the Adjutant General's Office", at pages 110 and 111. Photocopies are available from the Clerk's Office at $2.50 each.
