BRINGING SAP IN, EARLY 40s

BRINGING SAP IN, EARLY 40s

This is the way the sap was transported from the bush to the sap house prior to plastic hose/pipe draped from tree to tree to a holding tank.My Dad. Howard Tait is driving the team, bros Glen & Jim next and Dad's bro Phillip standing on the gathering tank runners. Making syrup was a hard days work in those days - walking from tree to tree, dumping the sap into pails and carrying it to the tank - which if the horses were properly trained - was where you stopped it. Buster & Charlie (in photo) were well behaved in that respect. Being that the sap bush was a good quarter mile from the sap house the horses worked as hard as the men. --Harriett Schultz
