VANHOSEN - My 3rd Great-grandfather was Cornelius Northrup Vanhosen (1817-1876), a native of New York State. There are numerous variations of the name including Vanhoosen, Vanhoesen, Vanhousen, Vanhusen; but they all seem to trace their lineage to the Albany/Hudson Valley region. Cornelius arrived in Iowa in the early 1840's and always gave his own birthplace (and that of his parents) as New York. Following his death, some of his offspring began reporting that Cornelius was born in Holland. However, there is some evidence to suggest that he was a descendant of Albert Vanhoesen who settled near Delhi in Delaware County, NY with some of his own sons between 1800-1810. The Northrup name was also quite prominent here and I believe there was a connection to this clan. Anyone with information or suggestions, please respond. Steve Halley - posted 01-2014

VOIGT - I am very interested in learning more about my 3rd-great grandfather, John C. VOIGT. All I know about him is through family stories and a headstone in Partridge Island Cemetery: He drowned in a 'mill pond' in Fishs Eddy, in May 1855. He came from Germany. I believe he is one of the 'death statistics' in the 1855 NY State Census: 42 year old carpenter from Germany drowned in May 1855. Based on Census data, I believe that his wife (Wilhelmina) and kids came over from Germany either in 1854 or 1855. They show up in the 1860 Census. Since John VOIGT was listed as a carpenter and drowned in a mill pond, I’m assuming he was working at a saw mill when he died. I found 2 historical maps of Delaware County that show saw mills in the Fishs Eddy area. I am looking for any information on Saw Mills that were operating in the Fishs Eddy area in the 1850s. Letters of Administration were granted to Triphena on the estate of Jacob Voorheis late of Delaware County dec'd - recorded: July 18, 1840. In the 1850 census, Triphena was listed as living with her daughter Louisa's family, James & Louisa Mackey & children in Gilboa, Schoharie County. Since this family is associated with both counties, it will be posted to both. Joyce Riedinger - posted 01-2009

VOTEE - I am doing a little genealogy research on my Uncle, George Votee, who lived in South Kortright for a number of years with his wife (my aunt) Gladys. As a young girl, my Sister, Mother & Father would come to South Kortright and stay with them for a few weeks each summer. Gladys was my mother's sister. We came from Middletown, NY. I have good information on my Aunt Gladys and now I am looking at my Uncle George who was a WWI veteran. I have good information on him but I am looking at one area of his life that may or may not be correct. George worked at the local creamery and in conversation with my sister we thought he also belonged to a local Fire Department. Can someone direct me to the proper Fire department's for any information on him being a member? Sometimes fire departments keep good records on local history and membership.
