THE SAMUEL PALMERTON & LYDIA ANN KELSEY FAMILY

Samuel Palmerton (1817 – 1896) was the son of Sylvenus Palmerton (1792 – 1884) and Eleanor Eggleston (1794 – 1855); he was born in Ballston, Saratoga, NY and in the 1830 Federal Census shows that his father was living in Delaware County, NY., the 1840 Federal Census shows that this Palmerton family settled in the Tompkins area of Delaware County. Both of Samuel’s parents were buried in the Whitman Cemetery (source: index.html/cemmason.html ) along with one of their grandsons Harvey B, son of Samuel and Lydia Palmerton, who according to info from this site died on February 18, 1864 at the age of eleven years and 4 months.

Samuel Palmerton married Lydia Ann Kelsy (1823 – 1908) on December 14, 1842 in Cannonsville, NY by Rev. A. Fields (Source: index.html/oldnewsidx/Marriages_Deaths_1837-1849.pdf ). Lydia was born Nov 1823 to Roswell Kelsey and Hannah Smith.

Samuel and Lydia settled into the Deposit area of Delaware County and had six children: Sarah “Sadie’ Ann (1843 – 1917), Frances Ellen (1845 – 1911), George W (1848 – 1927), Harvey (1852 – 1864), Dr. Roswell Kelsey (1857 – 1938) and Capitola Hannah Palmerton.

Sarah “Sadie” Ann Palmerton married Michael Van Buren Shippey (1833 – 1899) and they had one son Ellis Lee Van Shippey (1867 – 1946).

Frances Ellen Palmerton married John Reedy (1840 – ?) and they had one son Milton Reedy (1880 – 1901).

George W. Palmerton married Josephine Cook (1850 – 1934) and they lived with George’s parents eventually taking over the family farm. They had one daughter Edna Palmerton (1874 - ?).

Harvey Palmerton (1852 – 1864) died early in life and is buried in the Whitman Cemetery.

Dr. Roswell Kelsey Palmerton (1857 – 1938) married Jennie Bennett Wilson (1858 - ?) and they had one son Abel Bennett Palmerton (1880 – 1940). Jennie’s first cousin Abel Bennett Jr. was the first mayor of Binghamton, NY. Dr. Palmerton divorced Jennie around 1898 and several years later married Lillian Maude Darling. Roswell and Lillian had three children: Lucille (1902 – 1975), Roswell K Jr. (1905 – 1992) and Carola (1914 - ?).

Capitola Hannah Palmerton married Frank Couse (1858 – 1945) and they had four daughters with the last two being twins: Jessie (1878 – 1962), Sarah Adelaide “Sadie” (1885 – 1965), Frances Adeen (1895 – 1978) and Florence A (1895 – 1974).
