John Jenkins

John L Jenkins born June 1, 1844 to Cornelius Jenkins and Lurancy Lockwood, Town of Roxbury. John entered military service October 28, 1861 in the 4th NY Heavy Artillery. He served 3 years as a private and reenlisted. John was captured at Weldon RR, near Petersburg, VA, as the Union was trying to destroy the resupply lines of the Confederates. John wrote home, after being held at a prisoner of war camp that was moving around as Sherman neared the coast, that he was on his way back. His message indicated that he had become sick while being held captive. He was not heard from again.

John was brother to Belinda Jenkins Thorington, Elizabeth Jenkins Dent, Polly Jenkins Barnum, Hiram Jenkins, Abram Jenkins, George H Jenkins.
