Note: - from Jackie Budell, June 27, 2002
I am a Civil War researcher with special interest in the 1st New York Vol. Engineer regiment. I discovered on this website that several of its veterans are buried at Paige Cemetery, so I compared the list with the official regimental roster. I offer the following observations:
1. All the men of the 1st NY Eng listed were in Co. C. They were all transferred from the 144th Infantry on October 27, 1864. These men are Charles H. Bogart, Samuel Hotchkiss, Solomon Hotchkiss, George A. Signor, Thomas E. White, and Warren Williams.
2. Of these men, some are listed as Co. C on your page, some don't have the company listed, and with Thomas E. White, the company is listed
as G instead of C. They were all in the same company.
Note from Daniel Pete, June 4, 2003
My records indicate that Stephen W. Dana served the State of Maine in the following units: 1862-1863 1)16th Regiment, Maine Infantry: Co. B, and 1863-1865 2)2nd Regiment, Maine Cavalry: Co. I. The information can be backed up by visiting the Civil War Soldiers & Sailors System (National Park Service).

rosters.
(1) Seems to me to be very young, but headstone appears to be gov't issue.
(2) Killed at Bentonsville, N.C.
(3) Died at Alexandria, Va.
(4) Buried at Hilton Head, S.C.
(5) Seems very young - only 13 at muster-out.
(6) Died at Washington, D.C.
(7) Died at Folly Island, S.C. (Marker also at Hamden)
(8) Buried at Beaufort, S.C.
(9) Died at Hilton Head, S.C.
(10) Also Co.C 3rd Reg.
(11) Spelled "Van Volkinburg" on headstone
(12) Headstone reads "At Honey Hill", but date of death doesn't support this.
(This is what got me interested in the battle of Honey Hill --Gary Myers).
