This is a postcard from the 1950s showing the Pappas Building on Main St in Downsville. Judging from the autos in the picture I would say that it dates from 1948 or '49. This building was owned by Harry Pappas. His living quarters were on the second floor. Every Sunday, he would sit in the front where he could see out the door to see who was coming in and hand them their Sunday Paper. Harry also operated a soda fountain and lunch counter with booth seats also. Many of us (me included) ate our lunches there - it was maybe two tenths ± mile walk from the school. There was no signal light at the intersection of Rts 30 & 206 (bldg sat on the corner) yet. That came several years later. --Harriett Schultz, January 12, 2005 |
