CHRISTMAS AT PETER AND EMMA (WHITMAN) COUSES' HOUSE - 1905
Helen and Graydon Pearsall stand in front of the Christmas Tree at their Grandparents' House.
One of the earliest Christmas memories that my Grandmother Helen Emma Pearsall Cooley had was when she and her family, LaVerne and Nellie (Couse) Pearsall with son Graydon, went to Grandpa and Grandma Couses' house to celebrate Christmas. To attend the Christmas 1905 party, the Pearsall family would travel by horse and sleigh (or buggy - weather depending) from Masonville to Deposit where Peter and Emma (Whitman) Couse lived. At that time, Helen and Graydon were the only grandchildren for the Couses to spoil and they put on a very special Christmas for them. They decorated the parlor by hanging presents from strings strung across the room and placed other presents into or on to the Christmas tree. At that time, presents weren't wrapped in paper and no one saw the tree until it was time to celebrate the Christmas Tree.
Finally when it was time for the Christmas Tree celebration, Helen walked into the decorated parlor and saw the big doll sitting in the tree. She turned to her grandmother and asked "Is that for me?" Little Helen was so thrilled that that beautiful doll was for her. This was a very special Christmas for her.
