Biography of Justin M. Smith

Justin M. Smith was born in Deaware countym in 1817m abd at the age of seventeen he came to Painted Post, and from there to Corning in 1850. From 1840 to 1846 he was engaged in dry goods business at Painted Post, also went to California in 1849. From 1850 to 1852 he was a bookkeeper for a foundry firm un Corning, and after that in the employ of the Fall Brook & Blossburg Railroad for one year. In February, 1854, he went into the dry goods business in connection with the late Wiliam W. Hayt. Since 1862 the firm of Smith & Waite, the oldest firm in continual business in Corning. On account of impaired health he sold his interest in the business to N. E. Waite, his partner, and T.W. Kruger, who will continue the business under the name of Waite & Kruger. He was for thirty years trustee of the Presbyterian church.
