WYCKOFF SISTERS from GRAND GORGE
By Karen Cuccinello email@example.com - Written August 2017
These two lovely ladies, Jennie and Lena, have a folder in the “known photo” boxes at the Stamford Village Library. I decided to try and compile bios on them because of Jennies gorgeous dress. Sadly I was not able to find very much information on them. Perhaps our readers can help out.
The girls parents, John B. and T. Estella (Crary) Wyckoff were married May 19 1880 in Grand Gorge. Jennie, born June 1884, appears to be the oldest in the family, next came Lena, born June 1886, followed by Mabel and John C.
Jennie attended Oneonta High School in 1905 and, I believe, Stamford Seminary. In the same year Lena's husband-to-be was attending Albany Business College.
On September 14, 1908 a marriage took place in Roxbury; that of Harry Daniel Booth a store clerk and Lena Estella, both age 22 from Grand Gorge. Harry's parents were Chas. A and Carrie (Knight) Booth.
Lena and Harry were childless in all of the census reports 1910-1940 and Harry was an owner of a general store. The census reports did not list Lena with an occupation, which was common for women of the time, but you know she would have worked in their store. Harry died probably in 1948 because that is the year that The Victory Chain Inc., purchased the large grocery building, stock and fixtures of the late Harry D. Booth of Grand Gorge. The Social Security Death Index states that Lena Booth, who's last residence was in Grand Gorge, died April 1974.
Jennie, a teacher, is residing in a boarding house with about 20 other boarders in the 1920 census for Yonkers, NY. On May 29, 1911 Jennie Eliza marries Herman Allen Dice, of Yonkers, in Roxbury. Herman was a 29 year old civil engineer and Jennie, age 26, lists as a teacher.
I could not find anymore information on Jennie, with the lovely black dress, nor did she or Lena show up on findagrave.com.
