BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The transcript is of over 30 letters written home from the Civil War by Orrin C. Reed to his wife Mary Ann Russell Bouton Reed. Orrin was killed during the War. At the time of his enlistment they and their three children lived in Cincinnatus, Cortland County. They both had their roots in Delaware County. He was born in Roxbury, she was also born in Delaware County, place unknown. They were married October 1853 in Andes, Delaware County where they lived before moving to Cincinnatus before 1860. Mary Ann was apparently married to a David Bouton for less than a year before his death August 1851 (Information from Probate Files). Little else is known about David Bouton except he resided in Roxbury at the time of his death. Mary Ann brought a son Erastus, b.1848 in Hamden, father unknown, to her marriage with Orrin. In 1850 he was Erastus Russell, age 2 living with William Russell in Hamden. In 1855, he was Erastus Boughton, 8, living with his Aunt Deborah Fuller in Hamden. In 1860 (and thereafter) he was Erastus Reed, age 13. Orrin and his step-son Erastus were "stationed" close to each other during the Civil War, as you will see in the letters. Orrin was only 13 years older than Erastus. Mary Ann was "Mrs. Mary Ann Bouton" when she married Orrin in October 1853. Little is known about David Bouton. Addition information on Orrin C.
