NEW YEAR'S EVE - 1902
"THE FIRST ANNUAL BALL" GIVEN BY THE NATIONAL PROTECTION LEGION OF MERIDALE, N.Y. In Meridale as in Delaware and surrounding counties the farmers had less to do this time of year, and if weather cooperated, they and the townspeople could enjoy some entertainment or a special supper. Even when growing up, dinner was at noon and supper was at six or seven p.m. Either I knew these people mentioned or their sons or daughters, Ralph Burns lived nearby, the Greens had a house in Meridale across from the School, and Ray Palmer was a great uncle of mine. He was a photographer at that time and later sold Model T Fords in Hancock. Notice the easy prices before inflation, dancing tickets are $0.50 and an Oyster Supper at $0.25. It would be really nice to have that type of entertainment again. Happy New Year, and notice that BYOB is not mentioned.
