Gravestone of Mary Murphy at the Davenport Center Cemetery
(before and after cleaning by Marianne Greenfield)
When funds become available, the Davenport Historical Society will have the stone reset.
On her gravestone are the words "Mary Murphy, wife of Timothy Murphy, the Indian Killer". It's the same Timothy Murphy who shot the British General at the Battle of Saratoga which enabled the Patriots to win the battle and France to enter the war on the side of the Americans. Timothy and his first wife, Margaret Murphy, are buried in Middleburgh and there's a statue of him in Schoharie. He and Margaret had 5 sons and 4 daughters. After she died, he married Mary and they had 4 sons. Timothy and Mary lived at the farm in Charlottesville. Margaret was his consort (she died first) and Mary his relict (she was living when he died)
